Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia’s Special Envoy to COP29, reaffirmed the nation''s dedication to combating climate change under President Prabowo Subianto''s leadership. “Indonesia is maintaining its prior commitments while introducing initiatives to accelerate the energy transition,” Hashim announced during the Indonesian Pavilion''s opening.
Among the key initiatives is a plan to add 100 GW of new power generation over the next 15 years, with 75% from renewable sources, requiring a USD 235 billion investment. Hashim also highlighted efforts in carbon emission reduction through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, emphasizing Indonesia''s vast saline aquifers capable of storing 500 gigatons of carbon.
Collaboration for Global ImpactMinister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed the importance of the Indonesian Pavilion as a platform for global climate solutions. “The pavilion’s theme, ''Sustainability Stronger Together,'' reflects our belief in collective action to address climate change,” Faisol noted.
Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni urged stakeholders to prioritize forest conservation, describing it as essential for sustainable economic growth. “Collaboration is vital to preserve our forests as a legacy for future generations,” he remarked.
PT PLN''s Green Energy RoadmapDarmawan Prasodjo, CEO of PT PLN, detailed the company''s role in achieving Indonesia''s renewable energy targets. PLN''s plans include a 70,000-kilometer Green Enabling Transmission Line to deliver clean energy across Indonesia and infrastructure enhancements like smart grids and battery storage systems.
“As Indonesia''s energy backbone, PLN is driving the renewable energy transition and fostering partnerships for sustainable development,” Darmawan stated. He emphasized the importance of global collaboration, including investments, technology transfer, and supportive policies for renewable energy expansion.

Indonesia is facing multiple challenges to meet its increasing energy demand, provide equitable access to electricity, and realize its commitment to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve emission reduction targets by 2030 (29% unconditionally, and up to 41% with international assistance compared to the Business as Usual scenario), as stated in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), as well as the 23% renewable energy mix target by 2025 and 31% by 2050, Indonesia will have to focus on a broad range of options in the energy sector.
Ms. Nanaia Mahuta, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, confirmed New Zealand''s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region during her recent visit to Indonesia. During her visit, Ms. Mahuta held a formal meeting with the President Joko Widodo, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Retno Marsudi, and the ASEAN Secretary General Dato Lim Jock H., where Ms. Mahuta highlighted New Zealand''s commitment in the energy sector, under the New Zealand Aid (NZAID) Program.
