In much of Central America, the regulatory framework around power delivery lags technology. Therefore, to make a practical microgrid on a large scale requires that the community be disconnected from the national electricity grid and be totally self-sufficient

Type of Project that requires :

A new solar plus storage microgrid in Costa Rica will provide resilient power and cost savings for an international component assembly and manufacturing company that makes sensitive components for industries from robotics to telecommunications.

The microgrid can also store or shift energy if outages or other disruptions occur during construction or when the factory is complete. Sensitive components intended for the robotics, automotive, aerospace, and telecommunication fields will be made at this facility, so smooth, consistent, stable energy operation is essential. 

The combined new solar and energy storage system is grid-tied and intended primarily to offset utility energy costs. Its secondary function is to provide battery backup power when needed. The system consists of 480 kW of solar power and 558 kW from battery energy storage.

Demand Energy and Rio Grande Renewables have commissioned a battery storage-plus-solar-PV microgrid at Establishment Labs S.A., a medical manufacturing plant in Costa Rica. The system provides multiple on-site and grid-assisting services, including peak demand reduction, solar PV "shaping" to smooth out variability, and backup power for critical loads in the event of an outage.

The microgrid, which is the largest in Central America, includes a 500-kW/1 MWh lithium-ion battery storage resource connected to 276 kW of solar PV. It is controlled by Demand Energy''s Distributed Energy Network Operating System (DEN.OS), which optimizes how these resources interact and perform. Under normal conditions the system will smoothly integrate intermittent solar PV for on-site self-consumption. When an outage occurs, the microgrid will "island" itself off from the grid and continue operating in standalone mode.
