The world''s premier international development agency, US Agency for International Development (USAID), is allocating a fund of $2.3 million to six off-grid solar energy providers. The funding will be utilized to electrify several healthcare centers in five sub-Saharan African countries.

As part of its Power Africa initiative, the USAID is providing the grant to six Africa-focused renewable energy developers which include d.light, Equatorial Power, SustainSolar, Aptech Africa, Havenhill Synergy, and Solar Works. The beneficiary countries are Kenya, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Malawi.

The US-based solar home system provider, d.light is going to receive a share of the USAID''s grant to install solar PV systems and vaccine refrigerators in 80 health centers in Kenya. The installation of these systems comes as a part of a deal that includes a minimum five-year after-sales service guarantee. The company will also train technicians from each health center involved in the operation and maintenance of these systems.

The grant will benefit 11 public healthcare facilities in Uganda''s Buvuma and Kalangala districts. The electrification projects in these health centers will be carried out by the South Africa-based SustainSolar and Uganda-based Equatorial Power. These two solar energy specialists will also install a water purifier, an autoclave sterilizer, an incubator, a device charging station, and refrigerators for reagents and vaccines and reagents in each of these health centers.

SustainSolar will also install its SustainBox containerized systems in four health centers in Sierra Leone with the help of another Uganda-based solar power developer, Aptech Africa. The solar-powered systems will run refrigerators for vaccine storage and water pumps. Aptech will utilize these systems to supply each facility with an incubator, an oxygen concentrator, an autoclave sterilizer, an ultrasound machine, and a portable electrocardiograph.

The grant will help Nigerian clean-tech company, Havenhill Synergy to electrify 50 healthcare centers in the Oyo state with solar power. Havenhill will operate and maintain the off-grid solar facilities for at least 10 years and will sell the electricity to the local government under a public-private partnership. Through a previous grant from Power Africa grant, Havenhill has equipped 21 healthcare centers in the Oyo state with off-grid solar systems.

Nearly 100 healthcare centers in Malawi will be benefited from the Power Africa grant. The funding is being provided to SolarWorks which will install its 3 kWh photovoltaic systems in these health facilities. The systems will power medical examination lamps, chargers, microscopes, internet routers, and desktop computers in these centers. SolarWorks will also electrify the staff quarters and train the staff in the operation and maintenance of these devices.
