One of the final vestiges of the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, the electricity grid underpinning the three nations, is on track to be removed in February 2025. Russia will lose a vital lever and means of influencing the three countries, while the three Baltic countries are set to attain new levels of energy security. The concert of activities from the EU to the national level to the companies managing electricity to bring about this change is nothing short of herculean, with February 2025 due to bring about another new layer of security for the Baltic states.

RIGA, July 10 (LETA) - The three Baltic states are fully prepared to synchronize their power grids with the continental Europe in February 2025, Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys, Latvian Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers) and Estonian Climate Minister Kristen Michal announced at a meeting in Jurmala on Wednesday.

In their assessment of the progress report, the ministers noted that the preparations for the synchronization of the Baltic electricity system with the European grid were progressing according to plan.

In the coming weeks, the transmission system operators (TSOs) of the Baltic states will inform the other parties of their joint decision not to extend the contract and to withdraw from the Russian electricity supply system.

The ministerial meeting comes less than a month before the August 7 deadline for the Baltic countries to notify Russia and Belarus of the termination of the Moscow-controlled post-Soviet energy system (BRELL) agreement.

In early August 2023, the prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and the countries'' TSOs signed an agreement to synchronize the Baltic countries'' grids with Europe by February 2025. They also agreed that the Baltic countries would refuse to renew the BRELL contract in the summer of 2024, six months before the planned synchronization.
