The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has commissioned Ghana''s first Hydro-Solar Hybrid power generating system, which includes a 5MW Floating Solar PV System, also the first in the West African subregion. This forms part of the first phase of a 250MWp solar project, which is being implemented in phases of 50MWp.

In a speech read on his behalf by his Senior Minister, Nana Akufo-Addo, stated that "this further shows my government''s commitment to deliver on the promise to increase the Renewable Energy component in our Energy Mix to 10% by 2030."

President Akufo-Addo, indicated the facility reiterates Ghana''s resolve to diversify the country''s energy generation portfolio and increase the renewable energy component of her energy mix. The project, when completed, will add 250 megawatts of power to augment the Bui Generating Station''s 404MW hydroelectric dam.

The Galgu-Naa expressed his excitement about the project and prayed for its successful execution. The CEO assured the Naa that his staff will work with the highest standard of professionalism that is synonymous with Bui Power Authority.

The plant, when complete will aid the alleviation of power issues in the immediate environs of Yendi as well as in the Northern parts of Ghana. The CEO and his delegation also paid a courtesy call to King of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ndan Ya Na Abubakari II. Forming part of the delegation was the Chairman of the First Sky Group of companies along with members of his staff.

Ya Na Abukari II, thanked BPA as well as the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, for bringing this project to Yendi. He assured the CEO and the Chairman of the full support of the people of Yendi which will ensure that the project is successfully executed.

Hon. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi thanked the Ya Na for his hospitality and assured him that the project would be carried out professionally and efficiently He also promised that the contractor (First Sky Group), would complete the project ahead of the scheduled duration of 13 months.

Receiving the delegation, Ya-Na Abukari II, thanked BPA as well as the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, for choosing to undertake the 50MWp Solar Project in Yendi.

The completion of this floating solar installation is a testament to BPA’s unwavering commitment as leaders of renewable energy. This project also contributes to delivering on the promise in our National Energy plan to increase the penetration of renewable energy by 10% by 2030

The 5 Megawatt Floating Solar plant is also part of the successful implementation of the Bui Hydro-Solar Hybrid (HSH) system, a significant milestone for Ghana within the West African sub-region. This innovative system in addition to the already existing 50MWp land based solar farm is the largest farm so far in Ghana. The combined generation from 404MW hydro plant and 55MWp solar plants, further advances the region’s renewable energy capabilities.

Electricity generation from solar is intermittent and to ensure that the national grid system is not interrupted by the fluctuations from the solar farms, a state-of-the-art 10MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been installed to provide backup power and mitigate the intermittencies associated with solar generation. This advanced technology, commonly utilized in renewable energy systems, ensures a stable power frequency to the grid during the hybridization process, further enhancing the system’s reliability.

As part of Bui Power Authority''s (BPA) ongoing expansion of its renewable energy portfolio, a delegation led by the Board Chairman, Hon. Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, and the Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Ing. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi, on the 30th of September 2024 undertook a Technical Inspection tour of the 50MW Solar PV Farm in Yendi.
