The Dominican Republic is in third place among the Latin American countries with the most electric vehicles per capita. It holds the same position in terms of the number of charging points, a position to which the company Zero EmissionRD, a pioneer in the establishment of electric mobility on Dominican soil, has greatly contributed.

Santo Domingo.- In the Dominican Republic there are more than 23 brands of electric vehicles, a sector that is growing "exponentially" in the country. "As of today we have around 2,300 electric cars throughout the Dominican Republic.

Almost three years on, EVs are still an exotic beast in the country: imports have increased, but spotting them on the streets of the capital, Santo Domingo, is still not so common. However, Robert Abréu, an owner of a car dealership in the city, says he is now selling more electric cars than conventional ones.

The adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in the Dominican Republic can be benefited by several factors. Among them, regulatory support and European aid stand out as crucial elements that could significantly boost the sector.

SANTO DOMINGO. – The fact that President Luis Abinader arrived at his inauguration ceremony in an electric vehicle, model Tesla S, is a sign that his Government will promote the use of alternative energies and cleaner resources.

There are already more than 1,600 electric vehicles in the country, including hybrids, in addition to some 40 charging points in different roads, supermarkets, and shopping malls. These are facts noted by William Pérez Figuereo, president of the National Central of Unified Transporters (CNTU), pioneers in electric taxis.

Humberto Reginato, general manager of Rix Energy, a provider of solar panels at a residential and commercial level, thinks similarly and plans to invest in maintenance stations.

“We have learned that all the Police vans and the Government vehicles will be electric and that the money saved from gasoline will go to the police for the increase,” said Reginato, who hopes to participate in the tender that will open with those purposes.

"In the country, sales of electric vehicles are growing. In 2015 they barely had a 1% stake and by 2020 they have between 2% to 3% ", pondered Reinoso. However, he highlighted that price, autonomy and charging time as the main barriers to break to position the electric vehicle among the purchase options.

In that sense, Deyvi Javier, a member of the Dominican Electric Mobility Association (Asomoedo), said that the country has 2,000 hybrid and electric units, of which 1,200 are fully electric. By 2021, even with the slowdown that the pandemic implies, according to Javier, the number of electric vehicle units could reach 4,000.

For Javier, some factors that have driven the growth of electric mobility at a global level are the greater attractiveness of electric vehicles in terms of autonomy (kilometers traveled with a single charge), technological improvements and reduction in costs and policies that promote the decarbonization of the economy.

For Augusto Bello, member of the board of directors of the WEC-RD, the problem of electric mobility is not only based on the issue of noise, but on everything that entails the environmental impact. In 2013, the transport sector concentrated 46% of greenhouse gas emissions and of the total hydrocarbons that enter the country, 40% goes to the transport sector.

On his side, Wellington Reyes, Commercial and Innovation Director at the Punta Cana - Macao Energy Consortium (CEPM), said that one of the main challenges of charging stations is the impact they can cause on the local electricity grid, because they represent a significant, transient and random power.

In the case of the useful life of the batteries, Héctor Irizarry, also from ASOTEMOVE, highlighted that manufacturers offer a guarantee depending on the type of battery, which is up to 10 years.
