The announcement is in accordance with the Electricity Act 4 of 2007, Section 36(5) (b), which compels regional councils or local authority councils to make public announcements prior to the introduction of a new charge or fee.

"The City of Windhoek has the pleasure to inform all the residents of Windhoek that there will be an effective average electricity tariff increase of 7,8 % for the 2022/23 financial year," the city recently announced.

The announcement said for the city to be a smart and caring city it needs to foster social and economic development through affordable electricity tariffs, being cognisant of the fact that electricity is an essential commodity.

City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye says electricity tariff increments are gazetted by the government.

The city council has mandated the strategic executive for electricity at the City of Windhoek to approach NamPower and other private entities within the extended boundaries of Windhoek to negotiate the takeover of electrical infrastructure.

In addition, the council has approved for older electricity prepaid meters to be replaced with standard transfer specifications (STS) compliant meters to manage the token identifier rollover process to prevent meters from running out of range, preventing them from accepting new tokens.
