Achieving this goal will require substantial societal changes in energy technologies and infrastructure that go beyond the collective actions of individuals and households to reduce emissions.

A little math tells us that to reach that target, we need to reduce our annual emissions by 22 gigatonnes, or 22 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent. That might seem like a lot. But by focusing on key sectors, we can get there.

This sector is responsible for about 22 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and has an emission reduction potential of 13.6 gigatonnes annually, with agriculture accounting for 91 per cent of these emissions on average.

The global energy supply system – which includes the production of electricity and heat – is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions, churning out 20 gigatonnes of CO2-eq per year.
