The electricity distributor who caters under the Mangaung, Kopanong, Mantsopa and Mohokare Municipalities, has in the past couple of months become the talk of the town as tariffs skyrocketed.

"A consumer buying electricity for R1300 in summer will receive 600.83 units. The same customer buying electricity worth R1300 in winter, will receive 487 units. They will have 113.83 units more in summer," Mamatu said.

According to him, the Eskom bill to Centlec is 60% more in winter than in summer. "Centlec had to create a tariff structure that would cater for the cost of supplying electricity in summer and in winter in order to pay the Eskom account," said Mamatu.

Mamatu has also urged residents to comply with the rules as electricity theft is a criminal offence. He added that one can be imprisoned for stealing electricity and connecting consumers illegally. "Electricity theft leads to revenue losses. In high density areas, it can lead to overloading of the network and cause damage to Centlec''s infrastructure. Electricity theft can also lead to loss of lives," Mamatu warned.
