The General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons, and Mines (DGEHM) announced on Tuesday that electricity prices will remain unchanged until January 15, 2025. This decision ensures that 93% of the Salvadoran population will not face an increase in electricity rates, which have been fixed since January of this year.

The National Energy Policy to 2024 of El Salvador guides the national actions on energy, following main principles: ensure high quality level and continuous and affordable energy access, decrease fossil fuel dependency and mitigate environmental and socia.

The main renewable resources used in El Salvador for electricity generation are geothermal and hydropower. While variable renewable power is growing considerably, there is much more potential for these resources, either for electricity or direct uses. The DGEHM explained that the government is implementing such measures to protect the population''s economy and avoid higher monthly bills amid a "complicated energy situation in the region, with critical issues in generation and pricing."

"This means that users who had an average monthly consumption below 300 kWh between January and March 2024 will continue to benefit from the reduced rates applied since January 2024," the DGEHM stated in a press release.

The authorities also urged energy distribution companies across the country to comply with the established price regulations. They have also set up a hotline (2234-6128) for any complaints or reports regarding excessive or irregular charges on electricity bills.

Through these measures, the Salvadoran government continues to provide subsidies to families consuming up to 105 kWh per month, supporting both household and commercial economic stability.
